A mobile sensory room that comes to where you are to help you get back to where you want to be!
The Sensory Sanctuary is among the first of its kind in the nation.
Sensory rooms are a therapeutic tool that helps individuals, especially those with sensory processing differences, regulate their emotions and develop coping mechanisms to improve their ability to manage sensory overload.
The purpose of sensory integration is not to change how someone’s senses work, but to help the brain respond in a calmer, more organized way!
Overstimulation occurs when the brain receives too much sensory information causing both physical and mental symptoms such as anxiety, difficulty concentrating, nausea, headache, fatigue.
Neuro-diversity is the broad spectrum of neurological conditions that impact how a person processes the world around them.
Anyone can experience overstimulation, however, neurodiverse individuals are especially susceptible.
Sensory Integration/ Processing Disorder occurs when sensory signals are inaccurately processed or misinterpreted, resulting in behavioral, motor or social difficulties. SID/SPD is not solely associated with ASD, it can occur with any and all neurodiversities.
The Neurodiverse community is a broad spectrum and the sensory processing struggles they face are just as vast, often making day to day life difficult.
While more research and studies are needed for concrete scientific proof, sensory therapy is having a positive impact on those who suffer from sensory processing disorder and sensitivities.
Sensory rooms provide a safe, judgement free space to develop coping mechanisms to combat sensory overload. They provide an opportunity to experience different sensory modalities allowing the patron to learn and integrate new ways of coping which in turn helps them engage in the world around them that might not be possible in open “typical” therapies and environments.
A good sensory room is equipped with tools to help:
Reduce anxiety and stress
Improve focus and attention
Provide a safe and fun way to expel extra energy that is distracting to one’s self as well as those around them.
Enhance sensory interaction by removing fear in small/ slow amounts in a safe environment they can control.
Most of all they can help improve emotional regulation related to the frustration of sensory overload.
